What would be the best tool to use for carving really fine line and intricate pumpkin patterns?
Would a piece of dental floss,or a guitar string work / Or is there something that works better?
Try a fine crotchet hook… that will give you the etching you need. It will take practice to use it without twisting it, but it will work. Draw your lines and pattern first on tracing paper, pin mark through the paper, then gouge with the hook.
An alternative would be to get hold of a fine hobby knife used to carve balsa wood for model making. A darning needle would work as well.
